It is almost impossible not to pay road tax now, if you are the registered owner of a car. The DVLA does monthly checks for untaxed cars and will send you an £80 fine within 4-6 weeks of your tax running out. The fine is reduced to £40 if you pay within a month, but can increase to £1000 if you continue to drive without a valid tax disc, and your car may be clamped.

Clamping vans patrolling the streets all now have Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) technology. This means that the clamping vans have roof-mounted cameras at each corner with cameras angled towards vehicles parked at the roadside. When passing a vehicle, the cameras will read the number plate and automatically check it against a list of untaxed vehicles.

When an untaxed vehicle is identified, a separate check is always carried out against the DVLA vehicle register. Untaxed cars are then clamped, or in some circumstances, removed straightaway. The number of vehicles clamped or removed is set to double to over 100,000 per year.
